EDITOR'S POST

What is the purpose of a resume?

Q. What is the purpose of a resume?

A. A resume is an advertisement that you hope will convince the persons reading it when you are not present to invite you for an interview. A good resume focuses the reader's attention on those aspects of your background which are most relevant to your current career goals; and distinguishes you from hundreds of other candidates, so you are invited for an interview and they are not. A resume does not get you a job, only a chance to come to the interview. If you screw up the interview, the resume won't help. If you don't describe your qualifications on the resume, hoping to tell about them during the interview, you probably won't get an interview.

Is there an accepted number of pages that a resume must occupy? My experience as an employer representative is that 2 pages is the maximum one can read especially if the number of applicants is sizeable. On the other hand if one has been working for quite some time (like me!) one may not be able to capture everything in 2 pages. What is you opinion?

Posted by: Romana Nyahwa at July 27, 2005 02:07 AM

My opinion is that for a graduating student one meticulously crafted page is the right max. length. For people of real experience, 2 - 3 pages is not only reasonable, it signals depth -- and let's not kid ourselves, Age -- and distinguishes you from the student pool.

It's worth noting that I was on a flight earlier this week and saw two guys in the seats in front of me leafing through stapled resumes. The guys may have been executive recruiters, I didn't ask, but I did notice that the resumes were greater than 3 pages and one of them had across the front page the following line of text in all caps: "PRESIDENT/CEO EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT" so perhaps when you're in at that level 4 pages or more is expected. It occurred to me that the resume I was looking at was likely prepared by a recruitment firm.

All that said, it is the STORY you're telling that matters most. The number of pages does send signals and you should take the effect of those signals into account for the position you're after. For you, I would expect 2.5 pages at least, and more would be fine. Draft big, but pare back to keep the storyline focused -- and keep the attention of your evaluator.

No-one can write your CV/Resume for you. Its a personal document and needs your personal input and thought. There are many books that have been written about how to do this and the internet is overflowing with sites that will give you ideas and templates and blueprints and systems and samples and examples ... but it comes down to the fact that you must write it yourself. I am a Recruiter with many years experience in this field and I can always spot a resume written by a third party. I dismiss these generally (unless the skills and experience are so different etc). My approach to them is that if a person cannot or will not write his/her own resume/CV, then what else might they not be able to do on the job?

Go to another of the articles posted here by The Editor and use its good advice. Its the one about what to put on your CV if you are just starting out. Its sound commentary and a very good start. As soon as you get into doing the homework on yourself, you will find that you can then focus this information on applying it specifically to the job or career path you are pursuing.

By the way, never manufacture information or detail or lie about qualifications or skills etc on you CV/resume, its most likely that you will be found out and its not worth the results.

Good luck in your job searches.
